"I've got eight puppies... I'm not a breeder, stop flagging me!!" [19 Jul 2009|07:44pm]

stupidpetowners

[antorris]
That collection of "Ugh" prompted the following from me. I haven't posted it yet, but wanted to get a little input from this community before letting it loose on CL. Thoughts/criticisms?

Here's why you get flagged, BG CL...

"I have eight puppies, they're six weeks and ready to go." By California law (and Craigslist is based in CA, so it applies to all posters), puppies without a vet's okay SHOULD NOT LEAVE THE MOTHER, IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, BEFORE EIGHT WEEKS! This is why you're being flagged.

"The mother is X, and the dad is Y, but I'm not a breeder." Unless you adopted Mom while she was pregnant, or she got pregnant before you could get her spayed (or you adopted an uncut male, and he did his thing before you could get him neutered), or some freak accident occurs (the neighbor's adult chow squeezed under the boards of what you thought was a secure fence), you are a breeder. An accidental breeder, perhaps, but a breeder nonetheless. Just accept it, and move on.

"Rehoming fee applies, email for more details/Small rehoming fee of $150/He's an expensive breed, so I'd like a reasonable rehoming fee." These all translate to "I'M SELLING MY DOG." A rehoming fee should be at most about the same as your local animal shelter - under $100. $150 is not small. If you're not listing the fee's amount, it's not going to be reasonable. The rehoming fee is intended to ensure the pet is going to a decent home, and to help offset any medical costs you've put into the animal. Covering deworm and shots is okay. Using the fee to help get the mother/father fixed is okay. Withholding papers from the CKC on your "Purebread Pibbledor" for another $100 is selling. Take it somewhere else.

With those points in mind, here's how an ad should read if you don't want to get flagged for not being able to follow the rules (remember, these should also be true statements. If they aren't eight weeks yet, say so, but don't forget to mention they won't be available for another two weeks, or yes, you've got it, you'll be flagged.):

"Two eight week puppies in need of new homes. They're black/white, male/female, whatever breed (Please, don't make up new breeds. A poodle crossed with a Jack Russell Terrier is not a Jack Possell Toodler or any thing else. It's a Jack Russell-poodle cross.), have been/will be dewormed and first shots. Rehoming fee of $60 (See? List the fee, don't get flagged. List the fee, don't get flagged. Make it your mantra.) to make sure Joey and Roo go to responsible homes, and to offset vet costs/includes food and water bowls, leash and collar/whatever you wish the pups to go to their new homes with, or just the pups themselves. E-mail here@here.com or call 555-555-5555 if you are interested or if you have questions.

Thanks for paying attention. When we play by the rules, we can all play a little nicer.

African Giant Rat [19 Jul 2009|07:47pm]

[parrotcrazy]
I was watching a show on Animal Planet today and it was about the Giant African Rat. I tried to find the actual show on Animal Planet's website but couldn't. I found another website to show you what they look like.

On Animal Planet they were helping to detect mines. Way cool.

My personal approach to people. [19 Jul 2009|07:56pm]

teufelsblumen
I come with a blade in one hand and a salve in the other.

I notice I have a tendency to come on strong when someone needs an attitude adjustment. Once they finally relent, I don't keep at it, though. I make peace and leave them with something to soothe the hurt.

I used to think this made me two-faced. I think it just makes me sensible, now.

This is your nugget of navel gazing for the moment.

A couple of rants about things [19 Jul 2009|07:01pm]

stupidpetowners

[firstborndragon]
Yeah no particular order, but both happened today/yesterday.

1) Was watching a show called 'Good Eats'. Cooking show. They were talking about eating crayfish. Before everyone jumps on me this is NOT the problem.

The problem came at the end, where the host said:

'Crawfish make great pets. They're easy to look after, easy to care for, easy to feed, AND IF THEY GET THE SLIGHTEST BIT OUT OF HAND YOU CAN EAT THEM. ALSO this poor crawfish he showed was in a tiny glass bowl. He was a big crawfish, and his CLAWS were touching the sides of the bowl. No way in hell could that poor guy move, nowhere to hide, and I bet his tail was hitting the back of the bowl, it was that tiny.

Things that get me:

a) Crawfish need places to hide, they need a bowl they can move around in, and they are NOT exactly easy pets to look after. You can't just dump them in a bowl and forget about them.
b) You do NOT keep something as a pet, then eat it. It just feels wrong to me. Yes, maybe the crawfish doesn't KNOW it's a pet, but still, it doesn't sit right with me.

2) This happened today. AGAIN the yearly 'My cat is missing' posters are out. EVERY summer we get at LEAST 5, 6 cats missing. Then there's also small dogs that go missing. Yeah, and EVERY NIGHT I get stuck listing to:

a) A poor cat or two crying, for HOURS trying to get into the house.
b) Cat/dog/rackoon/skunk/whatever fighting. Not a night gose by without a fight or five.
c) This last week alone, there's been THREE skunk sprays near my house.

ALSO:
There's hawks who take down rabbits as big as an average sized cat. And I don't think they know kitty isn't dinner.
There's groundhogs, rats, racoons, foxes and/or wolves, and other wildlife around. Any of which can hurt or KILL pets.

I am SO tempted to start taking down phone numbers, and then calling or mailing these people on this.

fic: Change My Life For Me (32) [20 Jul 2009|12:15am]

[marciavandecamp]
Title: Change my life for me
characters: House/Cuddy, Laurie and mentions of other characters
rating: PG, maybe NC-17 for a few scenes, but I'll warn you right on time
Chapter: thirty-two "Alexander Daniel Lang"
words: 1278
disclaimer: I don't own any characters, except the ones I created on my own.
A/N: This story is AU.

There's not the slightest trace of an emotion inside of her since the judge read out the punishment and she's glad that Laurie decided not to join her because it would've been a step backwards

Question About Rat Mutation? [19 Jul 2009|05:27pm]

ratties

[penanggal]
I remember reading (I think even in this community) about something that I've not been able to find information about anywhere on the web, since. I tried to do an ljseek to see if I could find the post relating to it and couldn't.

Anyway: Tail Claws. I KNOW I'm not crazy and I've read about this before - I don't know if it's a mutation or just a... thing that happens, but it's almost like a build-up of keratonin on the tip of some rats' tails that causes a claw to grow out the end. I don't have a rat with this trait, I was mainly just really curious where I could find more information/photos!

Even Google couldn't help me. :( So thanks for any help. :)

Mid-Missouri rat breeders and rescues? [19 Jul 2009|04:23pm]

ratties

[facsimilii]
So, I'm looking into getting some rats way, way down the line -- talking six to nine months at least -- since I want to have a good job in preparation for inevitable vet fees and supplies, as well as saving up for a Critter Nation double-decker. (I have two great rat-lover friends as mentors, so I'm getting tons of information on what to do and buy and prepare with.) But I want to take this time to research breeders in the area or, even better, rat rescues. But the problem is, all the ones I've found either won't email me back or are long gone. Does anyone know a good place with healthy, friendly rats in mid-Missouri?

I'm also interested in finding out what good rat-informed vets might be in Cole County.

A new level of twisted... [19 Jul 2009|04:07pm]

doc_neuro
I just heard a story about a bartender with an establishment not far from the site of a facility where Alcoholics Anonymous meetings are held. He offers free drinks in exchange for sobriety tokens. A one month sobriety token gets you one free drink, but turn in a one year sobriety token and you can go on a bender all night long. After all if you've had the willpower to stay sober for a whole year you've got some catching up to do.

People told the bartender "thats kind of demented and evil, dude". His response was that he couldnt care less, because he continued to find it hilarious. So far as I know he is still doing it.

If you believe in hell, then I'm sure they have a special room down there just for him.

Just wanted to share some photos of my foster dog, Fly. Some are from the house and some are from doggie daycare and he was with the medium and small dogs when I took these but he loves loves the big dogs too! He loves playing all day everyday and gets along with every dog weather big or small.

Well now, where did this come from? [19 Jul 2009|04:42pm]

[ mood | amused ]

Recently, my Myles, who was previously reserved and not too cuddly, has become very licky. A few days ago, I was lying on my bed and all of a sudden I feel this little tickling sensation. I look down and there he is, gripping onto my fingers and licking them. Now he does it every day, and today when I tried to pet him he refused. D: Instead he rolled onto his back, grabbed hold on my index finger and began to lick each finger and clean underneath my nails (lol).

What's with the dramatic attitude change? I don't mind, in fact its very cute, but it came out of no where.

Anyone else have dramatic changes in attitudes with their rats?

Update to my last post. [19 Jul 2009|04:46pm]

cf_pets

[utterlystrange]
Postmaster seems to be doing better - we're not sure why. While he still gets put out for a couple hours every day (he seems unable to use the litter boxes) he is now let in for a good chunk of the day.

We didn't change anything - I don't know why he's getting better, and I'm afraid he might suddenly get worse. But, for the time being, he is okay.

Thank you all for your suggestions in the last post. I discussed them with the cats legal owner. :)

In several months, I'm planning to get a tattoo in honor of him. Do any of you have tattoos of past or present pets?

help [19 Jul 2009|01:38pm]

Hey guys! I know you shouldn't diagnose on the internet, but I thought if maybe you guys have seen this before you could help me out. Dakota has this growth on the top of her snout near her eye.

Photobucket

different angle here )

The dark red half circle on it is the scab that it started out to be/it's still there because she scratches at it.

We got it tested for mange and it came back negative. Now they are testing it for ring worm.

I'm taking her back to the vet on Monday because it's starting to spread above her left eye. You can't tell in the picture, but it starts off looking like a scab and it continues to grow into that monster. I'm very concerned because it's so close to her eyes.

If any one has any ideas to give my vet, I'd appreciate it.
